4 beauty tips for beginners

Mascara, lipstick, baking, highlighting,  foundation, concealer, color correcting… with so many beauty products and techniques, it can easily overwhelm makeup newcomers. I’ve certainly been there before, it was completely daunting and almost stopped me from getting started. It’s an experience that I don’t wish on others so I decided to put together this list of beauty tips for makeup beginners.

1. Start Simple

Makeup is a skill. It takes time and practice. It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to master a glam full face overnight. I recommend starting with a simple everyday look. This should be something that you can easily and quickly replicate, that you feel confident wearing. Grab a complexion product (foundation, tinted moisturizer, cc or bb cream), mascara, lip stick or lip gloss, and blush. These are your beauty staples. Once you become comfortable creating an everyday look, you can expand your beauty arsenal and experiment with more complicated looks.

2. Select the right shade for your complexion

Complexion products can be tricky. You’ll want to find a color that is both the right shade and undertone. Differences in foundation and concealer shades can seem subtle but is painfully noticeable when applied on the skin.  In addition, many of these products oxidize, meaning they are darker once it fully dries. It’s important to see what the product’s true shade is.

3. Experiment When You’re Not In a Rush

Makeup skills take time and plenty of practice to materialize. There is a good chance that you’ll mess up epically and look like a clown at least once. It’s a virtually unavoidable part of the learning process.

With that  mind, I always encourage makeup newbies to practice more elaborate looks when they don’t have anything to do or anywhere to go. In fact, it can make for a pretty fun Friday night in.

4. Give Yourself Grace

So often, we have unrealistic expectations of ourselves. It’s easy to get frustrated and feel defeated when we mess up or take a while to get the hang of a technique. Remind yourself that you will improve with practice. Thankfully, makeup isn’t permanent. If and when you mess up, grab  a makeup wipe and try again.

Let me know if you decide to try these tips. How did they work for you?
